Primary Care Doctor in Lawrenceville, NJ

Brian Shaffer, MD, FACP is a board certified internist, with over 20 years of experience in private practice. He spent the first part of his career caring for very ill, hospitalized medical patients with diabetes, hypertension, respiratory, and cardiac issues as well as running his outpatient family care practice. He has a strong background in treating muscular skeletal sports injuries and he was one of the first 360 primary care physicians in the United States to obtain board certification in non-surgical orthopedic sports medicine. Dr. Shaffer has cared for the local professional sports teams in the Trenton area and the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) athletes.

His focus is on the overall well-being of his patients with attributes such as good listening skills and empathy. He takes the time to get to know his patients entire medical history. “I am a good listener and will not let you leave until we are completely satisfied with the direction taken of our medical goals.” Many of his patients have been with him for years and they have developed the comfortable relationship that makes them feel like they are part of the CPCM family; from the warm greeting of the receptionist to the competent care provided by his medical staff.

Most recently, since the state of New Jersey has legalized medicinal marijuana (MMJ), he has seen great success in the use of MMJ in treating conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, migraines, inflammatory bowel diseases, spinal stenosis and failed back syndrome. Medicinal cannabis can treat these conditions in a holistic way without using opiates for pain or often reducing its dosage. Dr. Shaffer feels that MMJ has given him another tool to use in truly making a difference in the quality and function of his patients lives. He has published his data on heart patients and has over a hundred testimonials of success.

Dr. Shaffer attended the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium, completed his internship at Carney’s Boston University Hospital, residency at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy , NJ and his fellowship in Sports Medicine at SUNY, Buffalo. His undergraduate education was at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His private medical practice is conveniently located in Princeton, NJ and he has consulting privileges at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital Barnabas in Hamilton.

Dr. Shaffer enjoys staying active with cycling, skiing and he swims with the Jersey Area Masters Program in Skillman, NJ.
